Bob Jamieson – Obituary

The SMRC are saddened to hear of the passing of former member, Bob Jamieson.

Bob was a businessman, who enjoyed motorsport for many years, whether competing himself or sponsoring Scottish based drivers. He lived in Peebles in later years, and passed away recently aged 78.

He worked in Radio in the UK, then went to Canada. He returned and later started his company Novaphone. This developed, and he had the Vodaphone franchise for Scotland in the late 80s, when sales and usage of mobile phones were really taking off.  This was a successful venture. It was via this company he sponsored several drivers, as well as Scottish football teams Hearts and Dundee.

Bob started competing in Hillclimbs and Sprints in the 70s, and sponsored Scottish Formula Ford racers. He went on to sponsor multiple Scottish Champion, Ian Forrest, when Ian competed in BTCC racing a BMW. Novaphone was one of the main sponsors of Forrest’s 1989 and 1990 campaigns.

Bob was also a racing driver, and he occasionally raced in Scotland, at both Ingliston and Knockhill. He drove Imp saloons and Davrian sportscars. He was particularly pleased that he won a Modsports race at Ingliston in the late 80s, driving a Davrian.

Bob sold Novaphone in 1990, but continued in business and maintained an interest in professional football. He had lived in both Penicuik and Peebles, and is survived by 3 children.
