Scottish Mini Cooper S R53 CupBack to November 2018
This is the 2nd season for these quick supercharged Mini Cooper S cars, running with Racing Tyres and a few extra modifications. Former Mini Cooper and Fiesta saloon car champion, Oliver Mortimer was unbeatable last season, as he won the first Cooper S Cup. He continued this form in 2018, and was unbeaten winning the class 9 times in 9 races before September’s races.
September’s reverse track saw Mortimer having to fight up from 3rd in the Minis S class. Returnee Vic Covey jnr a former Mini Cooper Champion led the class early on, pressed by Paul Wilson who then went off on lap 2 at the chicane. Mortimer took the class lead on lap 6 as the rain started to come down. He went on to win again. He was 5th in the S&S race with Covey 6th, in a race of 12 S&S plus Mini cars. Race 2 Mortimer had a quiet opening few laps in the class lead, then Paul Wilson caught him having passed Covey early in the race. Wilson sat on his boot for the second half of the race, but Mortimer won.
October race 1 there were 5 Mini Cooper S cars, and the top 3 qualified together. Early on Mortimer led from Covey jnr and Wilson. They ran close together then Wilson took 2nd in class on lap4. A safety car period mid race bunched them up and again late on, but Mortimer held his class lead throughout though Covey got back into 2nd and was less than a second back at the flag. In a race were 20 cars started and 15 finished Mortimer was 6th and Covey 7th. These Minis Cooper S cars are quick. Race 2 Mortimer had Wilson all over him for the 12 laps. Late on he opened out a second lead. Covey jnr dropped back in 3rd but was well clear of the 4th Mini of Stuart Buchan.
