Coaching

In 2017, the Scottish Motor Racing Club became the first motor racing club in the UK to run a club coaching programme for its members, with the appointments of Carol Brown, Hamish Smart, Malcolm McNab and Steve Burns as club coaches.

The initiative aims to add value to your SMRC club membership by making coaching support available to you, regardless of whether you are a seasoned campaigner, a young career minded driver or a complete newcomer to the sport.

All the club’s coaches have attained their Level 2 coaching qualification from the MSA, with support from Scottish Motor Sports and SportScotland.

The coaches will do an introduction to the club for new members, pointing out key considerations for their race weekend and answering any queries they might have and there will be at least one coach present at every SMRC race weekend. The ‘floating coach’ will be available to help any SMRC member whether it’s spending 5 minutes going over some in car video or simply offering directions on where to go for the drivers briefing!

This programme will be supported by the Scottish Motor Sports project and MSA Academy. SMS National Development Manager, Rory Bryant commented: “We are delighted to support the SMRC in the development of their coaching programme; unlike other sports, club coaching is a new concept for motorsport so it’s great to see the SMRC bucking the trend and realising the potential benefits a coaching programme can offer their members.

Carol, Hamish, Malcolm and Steve have vast experience across a variety of categories and having gained their coaching qualification, they are now equipped with a solid understanding of coaching principles which will enable them to play an effective role in the development of competitors at all levels within the club.”

As a club we’d like to thank the coaches for volunteering their time to provide this service to our members.

Marshaling

SMRC meetings normally take place at Knockhill. Details for individual meetings vary, but marshals are generally required to sign on between 7:15 and 7:45am at the marshals’ building beside Race Control. Sign-on times for the forthcoming meeting will be posted on the website approximately a week before the meeting takes place. The sign-on process allocates marshals to a discipline and a post on the track for the day. A briefing for all marshals is held at around 8:00am before everyone heads out to post, generally for 8:30am depending on if it is a Club or National event.

Lunch with a refreshment is provided for marshals at SMRC events and racing normally finishes between 5:00pm and 6:00pm however on occasion it may finish slightly later. Marshals should ensure that they are adequately prepared for a day trackside at the circuit, facing all weather with potential for extremely variable conditions.

To co-ordinate the SMRC marshaling force we have a Chief Marshal – Jim Redpath and Marshal Co-ordinator Jackie Spencer who would be happy to provide you with any further information should you require it. SMRC now have an online registration process for MSA licenced marshals to register their availability for race weekends. You can register your details as a Race Registration Marshal by filling out the form below.

The SMRC will welcome any new or experienced marshal, please feel free to get in touch!
