SMRC Junior Racing Championship
SMRC Junior Racing Championship Milestone
We are extremely pleased to unveil plans to launch Scotland’s first Junior Motor Racing Championship in 2022, giving younger drivers the opportunity to kick start their motor racing career in Scotland.
A maximum of four Junior Championships are allowed to be permitted in the UK, to prevent saturation of this very important driver pool. With three junior championship spots currently occupied, there is only one slot left in the UK. Following a successful proposal to Motorsport UK, we’re pleased to report that the SMRC have received approval in principle for a Scottish Junior Championship in 2022.
SMRC Chairman, Vic Covey Jnr, believes this is a milestone achievement for motor racing in Scotland, commenting: “This is fantastic news for our club and for Scottish motor racing as a whole. For the future success of the SMRC and the sport, it’s essential that we make motor racing accessible to more people, for longer. To date, the opportunity to start circuit racing has never been available for young people in Scotland, unless they have the time and substantial budget to travel further afield. We believe this initiative can create an accessible, fun and productive environment for more young drivers to get started in Scottish motor racing so that they can go onto enjoy a long and fulfilling journey in the sport.”
News of this new junior initiative has also been met with full support from our partners at Knockhill Racing Circuit with Events Director, Stuart Gray, commenting: “We are delighted about the SMRC’s plans for a Junior Championship. Getting more youth involved in Scottish motor racing is hugely important for the sports future and we look forward to working with the SMRC to help make this initiative a success in 2022 and beyond”.
Full technical details, including the choice of car, still need to be approved by Motorsport UK and we are now working on this more detailed proposal which we will be submitting to Motorsport UK for final approval in the coming weeks.
For now, we would like to invite any interested parents or guardians to register interest for their son or daughter’s participation in the 2022 Championship, which will be open to those aged 14-17 years old.
We will share information and updates with everyone who joins our registered list as soon as it becomes available.
